Welcome to the nighttime edition of Anxiety Relaxation Tips. I’m your host, Amber.

Now that the lame intro is over, let’s get to the anxiety relaxation tips. One of my favorite methods of getting to sleep, as well as getting better sleep, is to put a Youtube track of thunderstorms on my computer and let it play as I fall asleep. There’s something very soothing about the rumble of thunder and the pattering sound of rain that makes bedtime enjoyable. I have a terrible time trying to get to sleep, so it’s nice to know there’s a method out there that works.

If thunderstorms aren’t your thing, nature sounds in general create a peaceful ambiance that will have you snoozing in no time. My sister is afraid of storms, mostly because we had a tornado ten years ago that my dad made a big deal about when he yelled “HERE IT COOOOMMMMEEESSS!!!” as we were huddling in the basement, taking shelter. That’s my dad, for ya.

Some people listen to their Pandora instrumental channels while going to sleep, but I find that it’s distracting knowing you’ll hear a song you like and feel the need to thumbs it up. Nature sounds are nature sounds; there’s no trying to figure out what the next track will be. It’s just relaxing sounds. This zen garden track is good for me, whether I’m going to sleep or just chilling out in the afternoon.

You can find pretty much anything on Youtube, so a simple search for “rainforest sounds” or “crickets chirping” will bring up whatever tracks are related. You could probably search for a ten hour loop of bubble wrap popping and find it, though I definitely don’t recommend trying to fall asleep to that. Stick to calming sounds, not bubble wrap.

Feel free to share your favorite relaxation methods in the comments below. Comments are awesome!

  1. Thanks for the suggestions, Amber! I bookmarked the page in case I need it. I find crickets chirping soothing or music in general (though I do hate when my iPod selects a song that I don’t feel like hearing, kind of disturbs the pattern of sleep, lol). I hope you’re having a great night!

    1. Thanks! I had a lovely evening. 🙂 Got to have dinner with the president. Well, the president of the AFLC (Association of Free Lutheran Churches). He invited my mom and dad out, and my siblings and I tagged along. Bless him, he thought I was a teenager. It does my 27 year old heart good to be told I look so young. XD

  2. My husband LOVES thunderstorms to fall asleep to. It stinks being in california right now because we are in a drought and no rain or storms!

I have the worst time getting to sleep at night due to ringing in my ears. I never hear quiet anymore which the most annoying thing on the planet. I usually turn on Netflix and zone out to a movie or TV show, but next time I may have to try the thunderstorm thing. I’ve also tried doing guided meditation through an app I downloaded. It worked if I did the meditation timer for long enough.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll have to try thunderstorms tonight.

    1. If thunderstorms turn out to be too loud, try a nice soft rain soundtrack. Sorry to hear about the ringing in the ears! Hopefully this will help you!

  3. I’ve nominated you for The Creative Blogger Award. Don’t worry about answering the questions.

    1. Thank you! I’ll take a look, and if I have time, I’ll go ahead and answer the questions. 🙂 I was just so busy last time!
